Our popular Jam Workshops are designed for musicians who want to build their skills and gain experience playing blues in a real band environment. You’ll receive advice and mentoring from a house band made up of some of our finest players.

Three tunes are introduced by the house band before participants are invited to jump in and play. While these sessions won’t teach you how to play your instrument, they will help you understand blues structures, develop ensemble awareness, and learn how to play confidently with musicians you’ve never rehearsed with.

Our goal is to provide a supportive, inclusive space where players—especially those with less experience—can perform in a relaxed band setting.

The selection of tunes for each workshop is posted in the Workshop Facebook Group under Files.

The Canberra Blues Society (CBS) is conducting workshops for interested musicians, performers (beginners to intermediate standard) and for anyone, CBS members, family and friends, who would like to learn more about “The Blues”.

The workshops will be held over two hours on Saturday afternoons in the Keller Bar at the Harmonie German Club, Narrabundah.

Participants at all workshops will be given a history of “The Blues” from its beginnings to where it has developed to today. It will highlight the instrument or vocal style being conducted at the particular workshop.

The second workshop will be conducted by Dean Edgecombe on the Bass Guitar.

Dean will be demonstrating a number of patterns which bass players can use to play under standard blues songs. He will also give information about constructing walking bass lines.

You are not required to bring your instrument, just your enthusiasm.

    About our Presenter:

    Dean Edgecombe – Bass Guitar

Dean first picked up the bass guitar in the late 1970's and hasn't looked back. Over the years he has played with numerous bands doing punk, classic rock, a jazz and country although his heart has always been with the blues. He cites seeing BB King at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1980 as his "road to Tarsus" moment when he decided that the Blues was what he really wanted to play.

Since moving to Canberra in 1997 he has played with The Business, The Backbeat Drivers, The Groove Kings, The Jukes, Judi Pearce and the Arrangement, The Minglewood Blues Band, The JD Band and with his own band the Seventh Sons. He has backed a number of touring artists in Canberra including Mitch Woods (USA) Jan Preston and Doc Spann and also does the occasional fill in when another band's bass player is unavailable.

Dean will be assisted by Francine Minjoy, who will contribute the perspective of a long time amateur enthusiast.

BARROW OF FIENDS hosts the MAY Pro Blues Jam

In the vast ocean of Canberran music, these five f(r)iends have been sailing around each other, waving from different vessels for quite some time. From The Cherrypickers, Escapado Sol, Raising Cain, Wally and Eric, Jetson Five, Andy and the Roys to KillWater, they have navigated around each other to finally come together and make the musical crew, Barrow of Fiends.

They are as comfortable playing rock songs as they are playing from their blues roots. Listening to them play you are likely to hear songs by Muddy Waters, Peter Green, Ray Charles, the Allman Brothers, Gary Clark Jnr, and ZZ Top. The band prides themselves on having five members who can all sing, so listening to their harmonies will make you weep.

The band is made up of:

    • Tania (Crazy) Ladyzhynsky – Vox and percussion
    • Arron (Grange) Grainger – Vox and percussion
    • Gary (Gadget) Innes – Lead and acoustic guitar and backing vox
    • Ian (Johnno) Johnson - Drums and backing vox
    • John (JVB) Van Buuren – Bass and acoustic guitar and backing vox

Come along and see Barrow of Fiends hosting the CBS Pro Jam. They’ll make you feel part of the band and you’ll leave with a smile and a song in your heart.

And, as always; bring your friends, your instrument, your voice or just your dancing shoes!!
